India’s Budget Session of Parliament resumed on 9th March 2026 in an environment of high-level political debate, amid rising tensions in the Middle East. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the Rajya Sabha regarding the rising tensions between Iran, Israel, and the USA.
Security Situation “Deteriorated Significantly”
In his statement in Parliament, Jaishankar stated that the security situation in the region has “deteriorated significantly” in view of the rising conflict in the region. “There has been an escalation in the conflict in West Asia. This is a matter of deep concern not just to us but to the international community,” Jaishankar said in his statement in Parliament.
Concern for Indians in the Gulf
Jaishankar emphasized that the Indian government is keeping an eye on the situation in the Gulf region because millions of Indians reside in Gulf nations.
- The government is in constant touch with Indian nationals in the region and Indian embassies in the region.
- The Indian Embassy in Tehran is functioning and helping the stranded Indian nationals, including students.
- Every effort is being made by the authorities to ensure the safe return of Indian nationals from the affected region.
It has been reported that tens of thousands of Indian nationals have returned from the Middle East due to the tensions in the region.
Economic and Energy Concerns
While referring to the Middle East conflict, Jaishankar said that the conflict may have implications for the global supply chain and energy security, as the Middle East is of critical importance for oil supply. The energy security of the nation will be based on the cost, risk, and supply of oil.
Stormy Start to Budget Session
The second phase of the Budget Session 2026 started with a stormy session in the Indian Parliament. Apart from the Middle East conflict, the Indian Parliament is likely to discuss the following:
- A no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla
- Rise in oil prices due to the Middle East conflict
- India’s Foreign Policy and Trade Developments
India’s Diplomatic Stand
India has called for de-escalation and peaceful dialogue while ensuring the security of its citizens. Prime Minister Modi is keeping a close eye on the situation as the government prepares diplomatic and evacuation measures if the need arises.
