The atmosphere was tense even before the commencement of the India-Pakistan match in the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup. During the toss, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav and Pakistani captain Salman Ali Agha failed to shake hands. This incident occurred at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo and soon spread on social media platforms.

Agha decided to bowl first after winning the toss. The wicket appeared to be slightly slow and favorable to fast bowlers in the initial overs. Both teams were unbeaten in the major Group A match. India had already won against the USA and Namibia, while Pakistan had won against the Netherlands and the USA.

India made two changes to their team. Abhishek Sharma and Kuldeep Yadav were back in the playing eleven, replacing Sanju Samson and Arshdeep Singh. Abhishek Sharma had not played in the last match due to illness. Pakistan’s team remained unchanged.

Suryakumar Yadav explained that India preferred to bat first and defend their total, as they had done successfully in previous matches. Agha stated that the large boundaries and the nature of the pitch were factors in his decision to bowl first.

The no handshake gesture has been observed in recent India and Pakistan encounters, such as the Asia Cup 2025. This gesture occurs in a politically charged atmosphere between the two nations.

Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar expressed his disapproval of the gesture and stated that it does not represent the true spirit of the game. Former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja stated that the conditions at the ground have recently been favorable to bowlers.

In terms of past encounters, India have a strong record against Pakistan in T20 World Cups, having won seven out of eight encounters. Pakistan’s lone win was in 2021.

With emotions running high and both teams in top form, fans are eagerly awaiting another India-Pakistan showdown.
