Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has condemned the reported verbal harassment of women from the Northeast community in Malviya Nagar, reiterating that the capital is for all its citizens and that no form of discrimination has a place in the city.
The altercation began after a video went viral on social media, where women from the Northeast community were allegedly made to face derogatory comments, including the use of the word “dhande wali.” The incident reportedly took place in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, an area that has seen several instances of racism and xenophobia against Northeasterners in the past.
CM Gupta’s strong statement
Gupta began her statement by emphasizing the values that Delhi stands for. “Delhi is a common home. No one has the right to insult or humiliate another citizen based on their appearance or origin,” she said.
The Chief Minister also directed her officials to ensure that the victims receive all possible help and that the investigation is conducted in depth.
Outrage Erupts After Video Goes Viral
The video that went viral in a matter of hours drew widespread condemnation from civil society organizations and Northeast student bodies. Social media users called for rapid legal intervention and stricter enforcement of anti-discrimination laws.
Activists have long drawn attention to the racial profiling and stereotypes that people from Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, and other Northeastern states face in large Indian cities.
Police Action
According to the police, a complaint has been registered, and efforts are being made to trace and interrogate the individuals involved. The police have assured that the law will be enforced stringently if the allegations are found to be true.
The police have also made it clear that any form of harassment, particularly on the basis of race or gender, will invite a strong reaction.
Repeated Incidents
Cases of violence against Northeast communities have been reported in Delhi and other large cities. Despite awareness campaigns and anti-discrimination laws, prejudice continues to exist, according to community leaders.
Activist bodies have called upon the Delhi administration to increase awareness campaigns and reach out to the community, besides ensuring rapid prosecution to prevent such incidents in the future.
A Call for Unity
Chief Minister Gupta’s assertion that “Delhi is for all” has been widely appreciated, and many have welcomed the swift government response. However, activists have reiterated that such assertions must be followed up by concrete action to ensure the safety and dignity of all residents.
This incident, while under investigation, highlights the need for inclusiveness and respect in India’s large cities.
