Bangladesh Election: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party gained a sizable victory in the recently held parliamentary elections, local TV news reported from Bangladesh on Friday. The elections are considered a vital step towards political normalization in Bangladesh.
The election took place on Thursday and marked the first national polls since the 2024 Gen Z-led revolution that saw the ouster of the previous prime minister, Sheikh Hasina.
In fact, the opinion polls had already predicted that the BNP would do wonders. BNP and its allies got 209 seats out of the total 300 in the Jatiya Sangsad, or House of the Nation, resulting in a two-thirds majority. This victory has provided BNP with a chance to form a government.
Bangladesh, which has a Muslim-majority population of 175 million citizens, has been experiencing months of political unrest. The unrest had been disrupting daily activities and had impacted key sectors such as the garment industry. Bangladesh is the second-largest garment exporter in the world.
At the head of BNP is Tarique Rahman, a leading candidate to the office of the country’s prime minister. He is the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and former President Ziaur Rahman.
As part of its campaign, BNP promised to support poor families financially, limit the tenure of service for prime ministers, improve the national economy by encouraging foreign investment, and have a solid anti-corruption plan.
